Colgate to stop using animals

NEW YORK (AP) - Colgate-Palmolive Co. has declared an immediate moratorium
on using animals for testing the safety of its personal care products. The
moratorium covers a wide range of products designed for adults, including
deodorants, shampoos, shaving cream and men's and women's fragrances.
Colgate said 98% of all internal requests for product-safety approval are
currently met using available data and non-animal alternatives. Continued
consultation with industry and scientific groups led to additional
opportunities to reduce animal testing, the company said. The People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals lauded the move, saying it was the product
of 20 months of discussions with the New York-based company. See full story
