I am new to the EcoFeminism list, in fact I just joined - and I joined, as
many of you I am sure, to find out more about the variety of strategies,
ideas and theories behind the practical applications of Ecofeminism.
I teach performance and broadcast in a Women's College within the Higher
Colleges of Technology CommTech degree program in Dubai in the United Arab
Emirates. At the College we are undertaking a three day bazaar that has an
Ecology theme. The EcoBazaar encourages the students at the college to work
towards an understanding of ecological issues within the Emirates, a kind of
awareness that might not have occurred here some years ago.
In setting up a live broadcast, that will be aired on a local channel, the
students have approached several financial backers (to provide the financial
support we require for the outside broadcast van and set etc). One of these
financial backers is an oil company. Of course, it would be impossible for
anyone (myself included) to have a concern about the use of an oil company,
as this is a government institution and the govt here which is incredibly
supportive of moves towards the ecology and towards women in education (a
very progressive country in many ways) *is* funded by oil. However I would
be interested in starting a discussion that is not about whether it is
appropriate or not, whether the oil company exploits natural resources etc,
but rather one that allows the students to understand that there are
concerns that even those in government here would find relevant. Can anyone
suggest some gentle material that may assist to this end?
