Native Americans have many rituals which connect mother earth
and father sky to enrich our spirits. Not all rituals are connected
to neo-paganism. The truth is, even "self designed" rituals can
serve this purpose. I'll even go as far as to risk embarrassment and
tell all of you what I like to do. :) I go for long bicycle rides
on weekends. Usually my ride includes a long hill climb. When I
get to the top of the hill, I stand and hold my elbows out with my
hands, palm facing the earth against my breast. I slowly turn my right
hand to let my palm face the sky. Then, in a sweeping motion I
rotate my arm pivotting about my elbow until my arm is extended
straight out to my side. As I do this, I say the words "Mother Earth".
Then, I do the same with my left hand and say "Father Sky". It always
gives me a feeling of being connected to nature. The hand jestures
are from middle eastern culture. They are jestures of thank you.
The choice of words is sort of Native American translated to English.
I don't think this would have quite the same effect if you were surrounded
by black top, sidewalks and skyscrapers. :)
