In conversation with a Maori friend I learned that some forests can protect
themselves. There is an old growth forest in New Zealand that loggers have
been trying to get their hands, axes, chainsaws on for years. Every time
they attempt it something goes wrong. All of their vehicals break down,
their chainsaws malfunction. Something always prevents them from chopping
down the trees. This particular forest, and I don't know its name, is
sacred. You can go there if your purpose is peaceful ie a picnic. But you
cannot light a fire without permission. It appears that the Maori
population know this but the whites do not. They try to light a fire - the
matches won't strike, the lighter just won't catch. But once permission is
asked - and it must be asked of the trees, there is no human caretaker,
then you can light your cooking fire.

I really loved hearing this story, it made me believe in the power of
mother nature again. The loggers cannot log everything. thank the gods.

There is still hope
Kylie.
