postings. I fear the general US population as of yet has little idea of what
the effects of the current legislative blitzkrieg on environmental protections

I think there are great illusions in the democratic party. I don't think
it is a matter of extant democrats being 'back-tracking and lilly-livered'.
Gore Vidal has referred to the democrats and the republicans as the
"right-wing of the SAME party'...the party of capital and private
property. I would like to remind us that the democrats brought us Vietnam,
not to mention Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the Bay of Pigs (invasion of Cuba), etc.
Bush could not have tried to bomb Iraq back to Mesopotamia without the
overwhelming support of the (then) democratically controlled house and
senate. --
I've seen many references to those of us who 'don't vote' that we should
get involved in the process and that indeed, if we voted the
republicans wouldn't be in office.
First of all, I know many people who 'don't vote' who are actively
involved in trying to make this world more equitable. We just can't hold
our noses long enough to vote democrat. We feel that no choice IS NOT a
choice..thus can not be supported. e.g. people wanted me to vote for
Mondale...he who proposed a military blockade of Nicaragua at the time he
was running against ray-gun.
Or Barbara Boxer, the great liberal who has called for troops to guard
the US border here in California. Or Feinstein and Clinton who among other
things support capital punishment. These are not back pedeling
democrats...you must give them more credit than that. They suport this
system in principle, and as long as we continue to vote democrat we will
never have true opposition. We perpetuate the system and its great myth
that this is the greatest democracy in the world by voting
democrat.(don't get mestarted on"the lessor of two evils")
Sure, many people are relatively comfortable in this country. But at what
cost? The wealth of this nation was and is built on the blood of Africans
and native peoples and of the poorest 80% of the world.
I've mentioned this before, but a good indication of the total moral
vomit of this nation's political system can be judged by its prison
population. California now has more children in prison than any other
NATION in the world, and has the third largest prison population overall.
California has had a democratic-controlled assembly and senate ever since
I've been old enough to vote. Democrats are capitalist...the system of
'profits before people', the system of exploitation, and ultimately, the
system that will consume the resources of the earth if we don't find/work
for real political alternatives. As Rosa Luxumberg said,"the main enemy
is at home"
Sorry about my tone. I mean no offense to any one in particular on this list.
