I strongly agree with you K. English, I just joined this line two days
ago and must admit I was dismayed to see such hostile bickering amongst
women (womyn) who could put their and our time to better use doing
something to make a difference. I work in the service-learning field, and
advocate that youth work to serve their communities while learning from
the experience. The foundation of my beliefs rests in social action,
with the emphasis on action, and one of the reasons I get frustrated with
academia is the emphasis on reading and arguments around theory. While
these are essential elements of learning, how much more does one learn
about feminist theory from confronting the real issues that face women,
like how to stop violence, than one learns from arguing over the spelling
of womyn? Just a few thoughts which I am sure will evoke heated response.
