You know. I think of myself as a woman. As a grad student in a male dominant 
field (Political Science and Public Policy), it's the one thing that makes me 
remember that I am an adult and able to compete. 

Yet... when I am with my aunt or grandmother, I am often referred to as one 
of the "girls." I think it's just because I am a younger generation and they 
still view me as a child. (I'm 29).

Again, another example of reference.
