Greetings from the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation!

CERC is proud to announce that Summer Ecosystem Experiences for
Undergraduates, our field ecology program, has been successful in
establishing a financial aid program for the 1999 Summer Session.

*Earn 6 Columbia University credits in 5 weeks.
Tuition, room, and board is $1,000.*

Following is some key information about the program:

Summer Session 1999 will be held at Black Rock Forest, NY, which is a
1500-hectare preserve of eastern deciduous forest 1.5 hours outside of New
York City. Students will conduct fieldwork in the forest and laboratory and
computer research in Black Rock Forest's new science center. The five week
program offers students the opportunity to learn about the Forest from the
ground up, including topics in soil science, plant biology, wildlife
biology, ecology, and conservation.

The program is fully residential. Students will live in a renovated
Victorian house at Camp Olmsted in the town of Cornwall. We will provide
transportation between Camp Olmsted and the Forest. Students are
responsible for transportation between home/school and Camp Olmsted.

The summer session is 5 weeks long, from July 5 to August 6. The course is
worth 6.0 Columbia University credits in environmental biology.

Because of scholarship money, we have been able to lower the cost of
tuition, room, and board to $1000. In addition, we have a loan program that
will assist qualified students.

 What makes this program unique:
We believe that ecology should be taught at a local, regional, and global
levels. To achieve this goal, we are in the process of creating computer
networked exercises that will allow students to conduct research with five
research sites in North and South America. This summer, students will have
the opportunity to complete joint exercises with Biosphere 2.

Hope to see you this summer!
