Danish gays can adopt partners kids

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Denmark has passed a law allowing married
homosexuals to adopt their partners' children. Ten years ago, Denmark
became the first country to allow civil marriages of same-sex couples,
granting them all the legal rights of heterosexual couples except the right
to adopt children or to conceive them through artifical insemination. Under
the new law passed Thursday, adoption from outside the marriage remains
forbidden

U.S. moves toward marijuana research

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Clinton administration released new guidelines Friday
to ease the availability of marijuana for medical research, in a move that
officials believe will quicken the pace of studies into the drug's possible
beneficial uses. The new guidelines, "an extension of an existing process,"
will make it easier for academic researchers to obtain samples of
research-grade marijuana grown by the government, said Campbell Gardett, a
spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services. Many cancer
patients and people with AIDS have said that marijuana, often obtained
illegally, is able to relieve nausea and to restore appetite. Other
patients have used marijuana to combat glaucoma, the sight-robbing disease

Illusionists preserving white tigers

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Talk about your family portraits. The 49 white tigers
being raised by Siegfried and Roy are making their television debut in a
bid to raise public consciousness of the plight of the endangered animals.
The famous illusionists announced Thursday they are joining with Exxon and
the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to help preserve the animals. The
key element is a new 30-second television commercial that features the pair
and their animals. Many of the white tigers are featured in their stage
show at The Mirage hotel-casino. "I wanted to cry," Roy Horn said after
