Court won't stop canyon flights

WASHINGTON (AP) - Environmental groups that want the government to act more
quickly to reduce noise from sightseeing planes flying over the Grand
Canyon lost a Supreme Court appeal Monday. The court, without comment,
turned away the groups' argument that the government has failed to meet the
legally required deadlines for reducing such aircraft noise. A 1987 federal
law says Grand Canyon flights were "causing a significant adverse effect on
the natural quiet and experience of the park" and also raised safety
concerns. The law gave the Interior secretary 30 days to make
recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration, which had another
90 days to issue a final plan to control air traffic over the canyon. See
