Dear Sangeeta,
Thank you for this eloquent posting. My partner Chris King and I are in the
process of developing a "think tank" on the topic of gender, spirituality and
biodiversity. We conceptualize this as an ongoing forum that would create
influential reports for the media, but also as a paradigm of how seemingly
diverse topics and thinkers can be woven together in a democratic process
and that process fractalized around the globe. One of my ongoing concerns is
the way in which environmental movements sidestep gender issues, though they
are core to any understanding of our relationship with nature and the wild.
This seems to occur because of the immediacy of most environmental
undertakings, and is very difficult to shift. We would be interested in
talking with you more about your project. I had not thought about "mountain
women" myself, as a group, but can see the cogency of your position re IYM.
I like your list, and think it is really well-thought-out. I'm studying it.
One thing that might interest you for publicity purposes is that the Sierra
Club Outings Program had (when I worked there in the 70's-80's) some really
dynamite archival photos of women climbing mountains in the 1900"s--in
skirts, even. Don't have their url handy, but probably easy to find. You
might want to see about borrowing them for publicity purposes!
Peace,
Jane King
