Rural grassroots groups in Wisconsin that work to protect aquatic
habitats in the Great Lakes Basin can get a free website with design,
hosting and promotion.
Grassroots Rural Online Webworks (GROW), a project developed by
EarthWINS
and Clean Water Action
Council of Northeast Wisconsin Inc. with
a grant from the Great
Lakes Aquatic Habitat Network and Fund
(GLAHNF)
will help 10 rural grassroots groups in Wisconsin establish their own
domain name websites.
From August 1, 1999 through May 31, 2000, GROW will register the group's
domain names, help the groups design their sites and then promote their
sites using online promotion services. GROW will also cover hosting fees
for the 10 websites for one year.
Technical support will be available online by email and at the GROW site,
as well as by phone. EarthWINS will host training sessions at its home in
Shawano on use of the Internet/World Wide Web and/or website design. If
travel expenses are provided, EarthWINS will travel to a group's location
to do a training session
The GROW website will host links to the 10 websites, a guestbook and a
listserv. GROW will post ongoing reports about the project on the
site.
Requirements for a group to qualify for a free website include:
1. The group must be a grassroots organization located in Wisconsin.
2. The group must be working to protect aquatic habitats in the Great
Lakes basin.
3. At least 75 percent of the group's membership must live in a rural
area of Wisconsin.
4. At least one group member must have an email address and be willing to
help design and maintain the website.
5. The group does not already have its own domain name website
(e.g.
www.yourname.com).
However, a group can have a website with another domain and still qualify
(e.g.
www.theirname.com/yourname/).
6. Each group must provide two letters of recommendation from 501(c)(3)
non-profit groups with their application. The groups applying for a free
website do not have to be registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization.
APPLICATION FOR GROW PROJECT
To apply for a domain name website from GROW, please
send the information requested below with two letters of recommendation
from registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations to EarthWINS GROW
Project at the address below no later than July 21, 1999. Groups
that will receive a website will be notified on August 1, 1999.
1. Organization name, address, phone number, fax number, email address,
and if you have one, your group's website address.
2. Name, address, phone number, fax number and email address of the head
of your group.
3. The number of members in your group and the names of the communities
where they live. Indicate the number of members in each community named.
Example: Bonduel - 2 members, Shawano - 3 members.
4. When your group was organized and why.
5. Your group's mission statement.
6. List your group's current programs, activities and accomplishments.
Include a description of what your group is doing to protect aquatic
habitats in the Great Lakes Basin.
7. Explain why you believe you are a rural grassroots organization and
eligible for a website from the GROW Project.
8. Does your group publish a newsletter? If so, please give the name and
publication schedule. Feel free to send a copy of your newsletter with
your application.
9. What the group would like to do with a website - Research? Activism?
Fundraising? Newsletters?
10. Name, address, phone number, fax number, email address and website,
if any, of group member(s) who will be responsible for helping design and
maintain your group's website. Indicate the kind of computer (IBM/MAC),
and operating system (Windows/System 7-8.x) this person will be using.
Please describe how much experience this person has with using the
Internet and World Wide Web.
