Bison herd quarantine may be lifted

FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Brucellosis, a disease that has afflicted cattle
and calves around the country, could be eliminated from the nation's only
quarantined private buffalo herd in 15 months. Elimination of the disease
could save many of the nation's farmers and ranchers the expense of
vaccinating and testing their animals. Sam Holland, state veterinarian and
executive secretary of the South Dakota Animal Industry Board, said a plan
was developed earlier this year to rid the Triple U Enterprises buffalo
herd of brucellosis. Thanks to a $1 billion eradication program, only the
Triple U buffalo herd and five infected private cattle herds in Texas and
Missouri still harbor brucellosis, down from 124,000 herds nationwide in
1956. See full story

Researcher makes cheaper fuel cell

(AP) - A researcher says he has made an experimental fuel cell that is
simpler than others because it runs on natural gas instead of pure
hydrogen. If it can be repeated on a large scale, the finding would make it
cheaper to produce a type of fuel cell that may one day be common as a
low-pollution power source for buildings. The findings of the Northwestern
University research team led by Scott A. Barnett are reported in Thursday's
edition of the science journal Nature. Fuel cells are an alternative power
source for cars, power plants and even individual buildings. In a fuel
cell, gas and oxygen react chemically to produce electricity, water, heat
and virtually no pollutants. See full story
