Elephant land mine victim recovers

LAMPANG, Thailand (AP) - She's still too weak to use her trunk to eat, but
Motola, the elephant that lost part of her foot to a land mine, was on her
way to recovery Sunday after a lengthy operation. Surgeons worked for three
hours to cut away dead flesh and shattered bones from her front left foot
Saturday. Doctors said Sunday they were pleased with her progress, giving
hope the 38-year old pachyderm will one day walk again. The operation at
Thailand's only elephant hospital in Lampang, 320 miles north of the
capital Bangkok, involved cutting away about a foot of Motola's foreleg.
Motola stepped on a land mine nearly two weeks ago as she foraged for food
during a break from hauling logs on the Myanmar-Thai border - the site of a
half-century of insurgencies. See full story
