Primate lab giving up 300 chimps

WASHINGTON (AP) - A major primate research laboratory has agreed to give up
300 of its 650 chimpanzees after federal inspectors found that the animals
were mishandled during surgical procedures and were housed inadequately.
Under a settlement announced Wednesday by the Agriculture Department, The
Coulston Foundation of Alamogordo, N.M., will be required to hire an
adequate veterinary staff to care for the remaining animals. The foundation
also is barred from acquiring any additional chimps without government
approval. The lab must place 150 of its animals by the end of next year and
the remaining 150 by 2002. See full story
