Honda car tops EPA mileage list

WASHINGTON (AP) - A two-seater Japanese import powered by a combination of
electricity and gasoline is the winner of this year's Environmental
Protection Agency fuel economy derby, getting three times better gasoline
mileage than many automobiles. The Honda Insight, which will be introduced
into American showrooms in December, gets 61 miles per gallon in city
driving, and 70 mpg on the highway, according to EPA fuel economy rankings
released Friday for hundreds of 2000 model vehicles. Among the biggest gas
guzzlers were the popular large sport utility vehicles, many of which
reported about 12 mpg in city driving and at best about 16 mpg on the
highway. Land Rover's Range Rover got the worst mileage (12 city/15
highway) among the SUVs, but the likes of the Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon
did only a little better on the highway and no better in city driving. See

Pope honors 3 European women saints

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Seeking to raise the profile of his church in Europe,
Pope John Paul II on Friday honored three women saints, including Edith
Stein, the Jewish-born nun killed at Auschwitz. He proclaimed Stein and
14th century Saints Brigid of Sweden and Catherine of Siena as
"co-patronesses of the European continent." All three are "linked in a
special way to the history of the continent," John Paul said, calling Stein
"the symbol of the dramas of Europe this century." John Paul spoke at a
special Mass in St. Peter's Basilica that opened a three-week meeting of
European bishops, part of his efforts to prepare his church for the new
millennium. See full story
