FIRST NATIONS IN THE NEW WORLD ORDER:
Indigenous Organizing for the New Millennium

October 30, 1999
8:00 am-7:00 pm
Ackerman Grand Ballroom
UCLA

A Conference Sponsored by Occidental College
and the University of California, Los Angeles

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The CONIC (El Consejo de Organizaciones y Naciones Indigenas del Continente)
Consortium, consisting of nine regional centers and hundreds of local
organizations throughout the Americas, has worked to advance the rights of
indigenous people at local, regional, and international levels through the
transnational mobilization of indigenous groups of the Americas. The CONIC
consortium seeks to protect human rights, demarcate traditional lands,
strengthen new democratic units, and to assess and develop new programs for
promoting indigenous self- determination, representation, and economic
development within national and international arenas.

Representatives of CONIC organizations will participate in a public
conference on October 30 on the UCLA campus. Panels have been organized to
address a variety of topics, including cultural revitalization, political
mobilization, resource management, and ethnodevelopment (see Appendix II).
Each panel will be followed by an open discussion in order to facilitate
exchange between CONIC members and the audience on these issues. The
conference will also allow native groups and individuals in Southern
California to participate in this dialogue, and it will allow students and
activists interested in indigenous social movements, human rights, and
grassroots organizing to establish contacts with prominent indigenous leaders.
