10 treesits / villages are protecting forests of the Pacific Northwest.
CALIFORNIA:
--Luna treesit, since October 10,1997.
Julia Butterfly's treesit began in this tree on December 10, 1997, she has
yet to come down. The forest surrounding Luna was cut down October through
January of '97-'98 <http://www.circleoflifefoundation.org> 707-923-9552
PO 338, Garberville, CA 95560
--Gypsy Mountain, since September 8, 1998.
The defense of this mountain began with a sit in a tree named Aradia; it
ended with another treesit in a grove of redwoods above a murder
investigation. The death of David 'Gypsy' Chain was based on an outraged
logger who cut a tree onto the activist. Many injuries among the
treesitters have caused activists to take down most of Gypsy mountain's
treesits. The high canopy is no longer occupied! This Fall, MAXXAM/PL
completed unit #2's clearcut. All previously occupied trees have survived
this recent harvest! We Love you Gypsy!

--Freshwater treesit, since October 16, 1998
Nate just celebrated his one year anniversary of his road-side sit in an
old growth redwood tree, named Mariah. Nate occasionally comes down from
his sit when replacement sitters are available. Mariah and Nate also
periodically get shot at by disgruntled loggers who have clear-cut their
way out of their own jobs. <http://www.upatree.net> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
--Arcata community forest, since October 15, 1999
Oregon treesitters from Red Cloud Thunder have traveled to California to
set up a tree village to stop logging in the community forest of the
"greenest" city in America. The result is that folks of Arcata have begun
to wake up to the threat and they are rallying to stop the cut. After a
recent brush clearing crew was prevented from working, a dozen law
enforcement and security personnel returned, October 25, to ensure that
the public did not interfere with the brush clearing. Regardless of this
show of force, planned Fall cutting of the city of Arcata's redwood park
has been put on hold until Spring. Call the city of Arcata and tell them
save their park! <707-822-8184>
OREGON:
--Fall Creek tree village, aka Red Cloud Thunder, since April 20, 1998
This tree village has kept Zip-O sawmills from clearcutting the Clark
timber sale, which is composed of rare low-elevation islands, of
publicly-owned, ancient forest. This village continues to be the epicenter
of most new treesits that are sprouting up across the Pacific Northwest.

--Winberry tree village, started January 17, 1999
This tree village is defending 6 foot diameter cedar and fir trees. The US
forest service claims these trees are only two to three feet in diameter.
This rare ancient Cedar grove wasn't originally scheduled to be cut until
the second half of the next decade. But the "replacement volume" program
forced more public old growth to be cut sooner rather then later. Fax
Senator Wyden (202) 228-2717, tell him to stop "negotiating," with the
timber industry; tell him to speak out against this huge replacement
volume rip-off, by demanding the cancellation of the North Winberry timber
sale. Cascadia Forest Defenders: PO 11122, Eugene, OR 97440 541-684-8977
--Eagle tree village, started April, 1999
Outside of Portland, Oregon, a mid-air road blockade is occupied by
activists who are defending a roadless area in Mount Hood National forest.
The main treesit is high up in an ancient giant named Sunset. As the
Weather sets in, the road blockade, and the treesit, are preparing to make
it through winter. 503-241-4879 Cascadia Forest Alliance PO 4946 Portland,
OR 97208
--Umpqua treesit, started July 4, 1999
In the belly of central Oregon's timber beast, two women named River and
Madrone have been camping in the top of a tree named Madre Loca. The local
logging town of Roseburg, Oregon has been very vocal in opposition to
these tresitters; but now, more then 100 days into their treesit, the two
women are slowly eliciting more and more support for their message. Check

WASHINGTON:
--Watch mountain tree village, started June, 1999
In a demonstration against the Plum creek land exchange, forest activists
with the Cascadia Defense Network put up a village above the town of
Randle, Washington. Because this rural logging town has never benefited
from Plum Creek Timber, loggers and environmentalists have united in
opposition to Plum Creek becoming the owner of the slide-prone mountain
above their town. CDN: 360-497-2333 PO 718 Randle, WA 98377

--Fossil creek treesit, started October 16, 1999
This is another forest proposed to be traded off to Plum Creek. In
exchange for cut over land along the I-90 corridor. The Sierra Club's
Charlie Reins originally set up this trade, but recently the Sierra Club
has withdrawn their support from this proposed land trade. The State
democratic party has also stated that the land trade is wrong. Only
Republican Slade Gorton, Democrat Patty Murray and Plum Creek Timber still
support the land trade.
