Call for Proposals
Race, Class, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities:
Moving Beyond the Rhetoric
A Conference to be held March 31-April 2, 2000
at the University of Michigan
for Progressive Activists, Scholar-Activists, Students,
University Staff, Non-Profit Agency Staff, Community
Members and Anyone concerned about Social Change
The mission of this working conference is to:
- develop a vision of and action plan for creating a multifaceted movement
for social justice that incorporates Race, Class, Sexual Orientation and
Gender Identities,
- encourage collaboration between people working on Race, Class, Sexual
Orientation and Gender Identities issues,
- develop ways to integrate Race, Class, Sexual Orientation and Gender
identities issues into the work that participants currently do,
- bridge gaps and build alliances between communities defined by Race,
Class, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities in order to work towards
social change, and
- increase opportunities for interaction between people working on similar
issues and goals but in different settings.
PRESENTATION TRACKS:
Health
including but not limited to the following: cancer,
HIV/AIDS, safer sex, environmental health, violence,
mental health, body image, eating disorders, substance
abuse, domestic violence, access to health care, right
to die.
Relationships, Family and Kinship
including but not limited to the following: adoption,
transracial adoption, child welfare system, foster
care, right to marry, domestic partnership and the
institution of marriage, interracial and interclass
relationships, role of family as support, coming out
to family, family law.
Social Justice
including but not limited to the following: prison,
women in prison, prisoners rights, hate crimes,
feminism, black feminism, affirmative action,
the "-isms", disability issues, immigration, welfare
reform, embargo against Cuba, corporate welfare, U.S.
government system, radicalism vs. reform
We are especially interested in proposals for workshops and panels
regarding:
- addressing people's reluctance to openly discuss and address class
issues
- what people are doing in their own communities re: Race, Class, Sexual
Orientation and Gender Identities,
- ways people collaborate with each other and the experience of being an
ally across identities,
- how the intersecting issues of Race, Class, Sexual Orientation and
Gender Identities affect us and our work, including issues related to
experiencing multiple oppressed identities, and
- how Race, Class, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities affect Health,
Relationship/Family/Kinship and Social Justice issues.

DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS IS NOVEMBER 15, 1999
The Conference Planning Committee will make proposal acceptance decisions
by 12/15/99 and presenters should register for the conference at that
time.
