Politics and Consequences of Dams.

There are over 75,000 dams in North America (fact: IRN.org).
November 3, 1999.

It was those famous big dams like the Hoover Dam and the Glen Canyon Dam in
the early part of the 20th century that brought water and power to the west.
Dams were one of those big technological ideas that America was built on and
American engineers have built 75,000 of them in the last 50 years.

And the whole world, especially the developing world, has been following
their example. Large dam projects control the waters of the Nile, the
Ganges, the Yangtze and almost every major river in the world.

But now the big new American environmental idea is to tear them down. River
activists say they destroy water ecosystems. They kill off freshwater fish.
And they often make flooding much worse. The technology came with an
environmental cost in America and it's even worse in the third world where
millions of people have to be moved to make room for the dams.

Dams may not be the solution to development; they may be the problem.

We're haveing a conversation about dams with Arundhati Roy, activist and
author of "The God of Small Things," and Patrick McCully, campaigns
coordinator International Rivers Network in the first hour of the
Connection.
