Brazilian Ecosystems: The Protection and Management of Biodiversity

Antioch Education Abroad (AEA) is currently accepting applications for the
position of Program Director for the Fall 2000 Brazilian Ecosystems study
abroad program. This fourteen-week program integrates intensive studies in
field ecology, local and regional conservation and management initiatives,
and studies in Portuguese language. The Program Director travels with
students   throughout Brazil, meeting with Brazilian scientists in order to
study  conservation and management problems facing the country and the
region. The program also includes a three-week independent internship
module based in Southern Brazil. As many as 18 undergraduate students from
colleges and universities across the United States and Canada participate
each year. The position is supported by a Program Coordinator on the
Antioch campus and a Site Coordinator in Curitiba, Brazil.

Responsibilities
- Availability from July 1, 2000. Program begins in August, 2000.
- Teach core courses: Ecology and Biodiversity of Brazil and Brazilian
Natural Resource Management
- Work closely with on-site Coordinator to prepare and implement schedule,
travel, accomodations, and site visit logistics. Also help with select of
lecturers and speakers as necessary.
- Coordinate with Brazilian faculty who organize internships
- Consult with Portuguese instructor in the evaluation of language credits
for each student
- Participate in the selection of the Program Assistant (PA) and supervise
selected PA.
- Work closely with AEA on documentation, budget, and logistics for the
program.
- Assume responsibility for the well-being of student participants for the
duration of the program.

Qualifications
- Ph.D. in biological sciences or related field preferred
- Previous teaching and field study leadership experience required
- Portuguese language proficiency required
- International experience, preferably including Brazil
- Maturity, flexibility, sense of humor
- Excellent health and stamina

Renumeration
- Round-trip transportation to Brazil
- A salary and benefits based on a six-month appointment
- Per diem for the duration of the Program as compensation for the
difference in cost of living

Submit by FEBRUARY 1, 2000:
- Curriculum vitae
- A minimum of two professional references
- A cover letter detailing relevant academic and experiential background,
qualifications to advise and teach in an intercultural setting, and reasons
for wanting to lead this program.
