Dear Parents,
My name is Nicole Wordlaw and I am the Program Director for camp "Voices."
"Voices"
is a program for 6th and 7th grade girls sponsored by Women's Alliance, a
non-profit
organization located in Berkeley, California that focuses on women's
empowerment. The
"Voices" program aims to celebrate the unique talents and gifts that girls
have to offer the
community. Though every girl is born with special talents and gifts, a lot
of things can get
in the way of a girl becoming the best that she can be. The goal of this
program is to help
girls identify and overcome the obstacles that keep them from rising to
their full potential.
Girls who participate in this program will engage in a number of
activities. First, they will
attend 8 pre-camp groups (if living in the Bay Area), in which they will
focus on things
like their feelings about their changing bodies, their self-confidence,
their ability to get
along with other girls, and their fears about achievement. In addition to
these groups, girls
will attend one overnight trip to Tilden Park in Berkeley, and a
mother-daughter picnic.
The final and most exciting as well as intensive part of the program is the
week long
summer camp held at Camp Augusta, Lake Vera, Nevada City, California. A
total of 75
girls will live together at this summer camp from August 20-27. At the
summer camp they
will do the fun things that kids normally do at summer camp, such as riding
horses,
swimming, singing, dancing, creating art, etc. But they will also engage in
activities like a
Ropes course, meditation exercises, and daily journal writing, that are
designed to
strengthen a girl's sense of confidence and her connection to other girls.
The camp is staffed by women, such as Racheal Bagby of Bobbie Mc Ferrin's
"Voicestra", who are, among other things, mothers, artists, healers,
educators, and
activists. These women will come together and use their diverse talents to
help your
daughter develop her self-understanding and self-confidence.
One of the issues that is important to us at "Voices" is diversity. We
believe that the world
will be a better place for all of us when we learn to respect and honor the
differences
between us. In line with our philosophy, the women who will be working at
the camp
vary in age, ethnicity, culture, and sexual orientation. The girls who
attend this camp will
learn to talk about and think about issues like racism and sexism and will
discover for
themselves how these forces influence their lives.
We hope that your daughter will take advantage of all we have to offer. If
your daughter is
interested in participating in this program, she will need to complete the
application form,
with your assitance. As you will notice, tuition for this camp is $475.00,
which can be
paid in installments. We encourage you to apply for this program even if
you cannot afford
the tuition. We do not want to turn away a family due to lack of funds.
Full and partial
scholarships are available.
If you would like an application and brochure you may email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], or contact me by phone, (510) 525-7775, or fax (510)
525-0885.
