Gutenberg-e Prize Competition, 2000

Gutenberg-e is a prize competition for the best history dissertations in
fields where the traditional monograph has now become endangered. Thanks to
a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the AHA will award
six prizes a year for a period of three years. Each prize will consist of a
$20,000 fellowship to be used by the author for converting the dissertation
into an electronic monograph of the highest quality. For the 2000
competition (the second in the series), nominations are being accepted for
dissertations in the field of:

History of Europe before 1800
One prize will be reserved for a dissertation or first-book manuscript by
independent, public, or part-time scholarsthat is, historians who do not
have full-time employment in an institution that supports research. The
other five prizes will go to dissertations defended after January 1997.
Dissertations for the 2000 competition must be submitted on disk and in
printed form, accompanied by a c.v. and a letter of nomination from the
department chair or research adviser to AHA headquarters by June 1, 2000.
Candidates may also nominate themselves, provided they have their
dissertation adviser send in a letter of endorsement.

The winners will be chosen by a panel of distinguished historians and will
be announced at the AHAs annual meeting in January, 2001. All of the
prizewinning monographs will be published by the Columbia University Press,
which will receive part of the subsidy from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
to develop this program into a series that will create a model for online
publication in history.

The general rules are:
* Dissertation Prizes: Each PhD-granting history department in the United
States is eligible to submit up to two dissertations. Each entry must be
submitted on disk and in printed form, accompanied by a c.v. and a letter
of nomination from the department chair or research adviser describing the
particular merits of the dissertation and providing contact information for
the dissertation adviser and the potential awardee. In cases of
self-nomination by the candidate, a letter of endorsement from the research
adviser must also be sent.

* Independent, public, or part-time scholars prize: Candidates for this
prize can be self-nominated or nominated by the chair of the department
where the candidates dissertation was defended. Each entry must include a
copy of the dissertation or first-book manuscript on disk and in printed
form, accompanied by a c.v. and a letter of nomination describing the
particular merits of the dissertation or manuscript.

* Entries for the 2000 competition must be sent to AHA headquarters and
postmarked by or on June 1, 2000. Submissions should be addressed to:
