THE PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS OF GLOBALIZATION

A SUMMER SYMPOSIUM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON

JUNE 29-30, 2000

What is the relationship between the radical expansion of world
communication and world markets in the past three decades and the
drastic
transformation taking place in the production of knowledge? To address
this
overarching question, the Oregon summer symposium has assembled a group
of
leading scholars in the U.S. and abroad to examine the cultural
phenomenon
known as globalization along with the changing practices of the
humanities
and social sciences.

Topics to be presented include:

"Is Globalization Good For Women?" "Very Busy Right Now: Harriedness and
Globality," "Globalization and Ecological Criticism," "Doing Cultural
Studies Inside APEC," and "Globalization, Desire, and the Politics of
Representation."

The featured speakers are:

Tani Barlow, University of Washington
Alison Jaggar, University of Colorado
Richard Kerridge, Bath Spa University College, England
Masao Miyoshi, University of California, San Diego
Rajagopalan Radhakrishnan, University of Massachusetts
Bruce Robbins, Rutgers University
Rob Wilson, University of Hawaii

Admission to the symposium is free. Teachers, students, and anyone
interested in the prospects and problems of globalization are encouraged
to
take advantage of this extraordinary gathering of scholars for a lively
intellectual exchange amid the idyllic University of Oregon campus and
its
Eugene environs.
