I hate questions like this because they assume that there is some inherent
purpose or state of the earth that is, apparently, 'better' than any
other.

This shouldn't be taken as a 'I hate the earth, let's trash it' -- I
don't, and I think we should stop, but I have yet to be convinced that
there is some solid definition or purpose of the planet.
