Western History Association Call for Papers: The American West as
Living Space
Location: California, United States
Call for Papers Date: 2000-08-31

Western History Association Call for Papers
WHA Conference, San Diego, California, October 4 - 7, 2001

The American West as Living Space

The Program Committee for the 2001 meeting of the Western History
Association invites proposals for panels and papers for the WHA 41st
annual
conference to be held in San Diego, California, October 4 - 7, 2001. The
meeting theme is drawn from Wallace Stegner's book, The American West as
Living Space, which asks us to consider the West as both a space alive
with
all manner of beings and as a space to be lived in and responded to. The
2001 meeting in San Diego takes up Stegner's evocative title, prompting
us
to consider the many ways the diverse peoples of the West have inhabited
and defined space and transformed it into place. We encourage panels and
papers that focus on everything from federal land policy to regional
architectural styles, from literary constructions to cartographical
representations of western spaces. If Wallace Stegner has helped us
define
the West as living space, we also nod to the late Stanley Kubrick and
his
powerful film "2001 - A Space Odyssey." Both Stegner and Kubrick remind
us
of the intersection between space and imagination. And the committee
surely
hopes that the San Diego setting will inspire sessions that look at
California as a prime example of centuries of human agency responding to
space.

The Program Committee invites traditional history presentations as well
as
those that make use of other disciplines such as music, art, theatre and
film, ethnology, and archaeology, in explaining Western space. We
encourage
panels on the history of San Diego and California, on the history of the
Pacific Rim, and the Pacific Northwest. In the tradition of previous
conferences, we welcome presentations that embrace the many worlds of
the
West. And we especially invite sessions on the teaching of Western
history,
whether at the secondary, college, university, or public history levels.

The 2001 WHA PRogram Committee invites scholars, teachers, students, and
the public to gather in San Diego to appreciate and participate in the
lively times offered in a WHA conference. Submissions are encouraged for
roundtable discussions, entire sessions, and individual papers. Each
paper
proposal should include a one-page abstract. It should also include a
one-page c.v., with an address, phone and e-mail for each participant.
If
submitting an entire session, include an abstract that outlines the
purpose
of the session and designate one panelist as the contact person. The
Program Committee assumes all listed individuals in a session proposal
agree to participate.

Program Committee co-chairs for 2001 are Sherry L. Smith, Southern
Methodist University, and David Rich Lewis, Utah State University - the
Western Historical Quarterly. Send all submissions by August 31, 2000 to
Professor David Rich Lewis, Western Historical Quarterly, Utah State
University, Logan, Utah 84322-0740.
