* Winter Campaign Winds down; Summer Campaign in Full Swing

The winter season has wound down, the snow has melted, the balsam is
flowering and the buffalo have returned to Yellowstone National Park.

This summer we have so much to be thankful for. For the first winter
in 16 years, the state of Montana didn't slaughter a single buffalo!
Three years ago, when Montana's Department of Livestock (DOL) killed
nearly 1100 buffalo, our group formed to bring public pressure
against the state and end this senseless tragedy. This winter, three
years of hard work have finally paid off.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of
you for all you have done on behalf of the Yellowstone herd,
America's last wild and free-roaming buffalo. Together, during the
winter of 1999-2000, we have stopped the slaughter.

The Buffalo Field Campaign has shifted our focus to our summer
tabling efforts inside the park. This is our chance to help
Yellowstone's visitors become aware of the plight of the buffalo and
our work to protect them. Many tourists travel to Yellowstone to see
the buffalo, totally unaware of the treatment these animals receive
during the winter months. We are there every day throughout the
summer, answering questions, handing out newsletters, and keeping
people up to date on matters affecting the buffalo.

It takes long shifts in subzero temps as well as long days in the hot
summer sun. It takes hours of sitting at a computer or on the phone,
late nights worrying that the stress won't be too much for the
buffalo babies and moms, prayers and petitions, arrests and actions -
but together we have all pulled together to raise our voices for the
buffalo!
It is with respectful heartfelt thanks that we can know that all of
our efforts, great and small, have helped to keep the buffalo safe
this winter.

* Thanks!/ Volunteer Note...

Thanks to each and every one of you!
Every time you inform an aquaintance of the atrocities being
committed to wild buffalo when they cross the invisible Yellowstone
boundary; every letter you write to an elected official advocating
for the bison; every contribution of food, clothing, gear, money, or
time to our front-lines efforts is a step toward lasting protection
for the Yellowstone herd.
THANK YOU!

We couldn't have fed and kept our volunteers strong and healthy this
winter without the great cooking and support from Seeds of Peace!!!

"Spending so much time with them, we learn tremendous lessons from
the buffalo. If you want a sense of community, sit and watch a herd
for half a day. Last winter, an old bull, injured during a Montana
Dept. of Livestock hazing operation, ducked off the trail and
collapsed. Before the agents could get to him, six more bulls,
burrowing their noses under his body, had lifted him to his feet and
led him safely to some nearby willows where the DOL's snowmobiles
couldn't penetrate."
