BIODIVERSITY OUTREACH SPECIALIST

The Union of Concerned Scientists in Cambridge, Massachusetts seeks an
individual to serve as Outreach Specialist for its scientist campaign to
strengthen public understanding of and effective policy action on biodiversity
loss.

The Outreach Specialist, working as part of a cross-departmental team, will
develop and implement outreach and communications strategies and public
education on biodiversity loss and climate change. Under the general direction
of the Global Resources Program Deputy Director, the Outreach 
Specialist manages
a network of scientists interested in responding to and influencing
fast-breaking media and policy developments on global environmental issues, and
will carry special responsibility for planning and implementing scientist
outreach to the public, media, and policymakers on biodiversity science and
policy projects-focusing especially on international and domestic 
forest issues,
invasive species, and ecosystem services. The Outreach Specialist will also
recruit scientists with biological interests and expertise to the Sound Science
Initiative network.

Requirements: 4-5 years' progressively responsible outreach/organizing
experience on the regional and/or national level, including work with
legislative and media strategies, as well as program planning, 
coordination, and
implementation. Master's degree or equivalent is required; training in
environmental science and/or policy, and knowledge of forestry issues strongly
preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills, including an 
ability to
interact professionally with UCS colleagues, senior scientists, and 
policymakers
are also required. Proficiency in presentation of information on the 
web, use of
internet and email, database software, and word processing is required.
