JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Chief Scientist, Vice President for Science
SUPERVISOR: President and CEO, Association for Biodiversity
Information (ABI)
LOCATION: Arlington, VA
CLOSING DATE: August 31, 2000

INSTITUTIONAL BACKGROUND:

As a new and growing organization, with the strength and expertise of 100
staff and 85 partner organizations, the Association for Biodiversity
Information is poised to be a key player in the conservation arena. The
Association for Biodiversity Information (ABI) is a not for profit
organization that works in partnership with the Network of Natural Heritage
Programs and Conservation Data Centres (CDC) throughout the Western Hemisphere
to manage and distribute authoritative information critical to the
conservation of biological diversity. On July 1, 1999, ABI and The Nature
Conservancy (TNC) formed a new organization through a merger of the existing
natural heritage membership organization (ABI) and The Nature Conservancy's
heritage-related functions, primarily in their Conservation Science Division.
The new organization retains the ABI name.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Chief Scientist and Vice President for Science guides the strategic
development and growth of Science programs, projects and partnerships in ABI
to result in significant and enduring effects in the conservation of
terrestrial, aquatic, and coastal/marine species and systems. He/she will
promote and support innovative approaches for the development and management
of scientific information, including the advancement of decision support tools
that facilitate the use of this information in the conservation arena. The
Chief Scientist ensures that ABI Science Division works in full partnership
with the network of Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centres to build
these capabilities and provide these services.

The Chief Scientist serves on the ABI Management Team and ensures
representation and coordination with other ABI programs, committees and
projects. He/she serves as ABI's liaison with national and international
organizations, federal and subnational agencies, professional organizations,
and academic institutions to promote the development and use of scientific
approaches, methods and products for the conservation of biological and
ecological diversity.

The Chief Scientist provides strategic leadership in the development and
dissemination of the scientific data, methods, tools and integrated
information products that will empower decision makers to conserve biological
and ecological diversity at regional and site levels. He/she promotes the
development and promulgation of data and methodological standards to ensure
that scientific information across the ABI-Heritage network is robust and
credible. He/she will support the development of appropriate methods and
tools to complete the inventory, classification, ranking and mapping of
species, biological communities, ecological systems, and conservation
priorities across the landscape. He/she will promote the implementation of
methods that demonstrate the relationship of species and ecological
communities to biophysical habitats and ecological processes and to the
development of conservation strategies.

The Chief Scientist has responsibility for public and private fundraising in
support of the work of the Science Division and ABI. He/she will ensure that
all projects, contracts and overall fiscal activities of the Science Division
are managed in a manner consistent with ABI values, mission, policies, and
procedures. The Chief Scientist will supervise directors of departments and
all major program areas across the Science Division.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ph.D. in biology or ecology, with special emphasis in conservation science.
More than seven years work experience in applying the concepts of
conservation biology and related fields to conservation decision-making and
natural resources management.
2. Knowledge of, and preferably experience with, the Natural Heritage
inventory methods and data systems preferred.
