included in word count) and should be in Arial 12 pt font. Indicate the
preferred session and if the paper will be an oral presentation or poster.
Students should indicate their intent to compete for Student Awards. Please
submit abstracts either electronically or on 3.5-inch floppy disk in ASCII

Paper Title:

RISK ASSESSMENT FOR TERRESTRIAL BIRDS AT KESTERSON RESERVOIR

A risk assessment conducted in 1992 for Kesterson Reservoir developed a food
chain model using data from biological monitoring conducted at Kesterson
during 1989 to 1992. This model used estimated water-extractable selenium
concentration in soil to predict the expected range of mean selenium
concentrations for biota at Kesterson in the next 20 years. Red-tailed hawks
(Buteo jamaicensis) and northern harriers (Circus cyaneus) were two high
trophic level species for which dietary selenium predictions were made using
the model. Since the risk assessment was completed, feeding studies with
captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) have been conducted, and
further biological monitoring data were collected at Kesterson. We present
an updated model of selenium accumulation in terrestrial biota at Kesterson
Reservoir and provide a more complete description of the pathway from
bioavailable selenium in the soil to American kestrels. In addition, data
from birds fed small mammals collected from Kesterson are compared with
model predictions to evaluate model performance.
