This bi annual conference provides a forum for historians, sociologists, anthropologists, planners and urbanists working on all aspects of urban history. The title of the conference celebrates that fact that Edinburgh was an innovative centre of enlightenment thinking in the 18th century and in the 21st century has become again the base for its own parliament. This title is designed to invite proposals for papers and sessions on the widest range of topics � built environment, governance, population, social relationships, economy and culture. We invite proposals from all periods of history and from the widest geographical range. The invitation is extended to all who have made urban history a distinctive and innovative subject, - historians, geographers, planners, urbanists and those involved in conservation, policy studies, recording, archive and museum work. Participants are invited from all over Europe and beyond. Call for Session topics For the first stage we invite chair persons to prepare and submit proposals for a session. These should be with the Conference President or the Association Secretary by 1 January 2001. There will be Main Sessions of up to ten papers and Specialist sessions of up to 5 papers. All offers of a session will be considered. The final selection will be made by the International Committee by the end of February 2001 Please send proposals to the programme chair (address below). Language The official languages of the conference will be English and French. Conference Sites The conference will be held at the Pollock Halls and George Square sites of the University of Edinburgh. There will be easy access to the city centre. Registration Fee The Registration fee is likely to be around �90 sterling. We hope to arrange reduced registration for postgraduates. Bursaries A small number of student bursaries will be available for postgraduate students. These will cover the registration fees. Further news of the conference and details of registration and the programme will be available on the web site of the Centre for Urban History, Leicester University. Proposals for papers for the sessions should be received by the chair of the sessions and by the programme chair by October 2001. The social programme will include dinner in the classical splendour of the Playfair Library of the university. There will be a reception and opportunities to sample the many delights of Edinburgh. The City is a major tourist centre with world class museums, galleries and restaurants, easy access to Glasgow and Highlands. Early arrivals in the city will be able to take advantage of the Edinburgh Festival taking place just before our conference.
