ABOUT THE BOOK

This review of where the women of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the
Caribbean stand on key social and cultural issues makes compelling
reading. What progress have women in particular countries made? How do
social pressures, cultural expectations and continuing poverty hold back
effective recognition of their rights? What prospects, as a result of
continuing research, activism by women's organizations and measures by
government, does the next generation hold out of further progress in
women's social position? The reader emerges with a sense of anger at how
much still needs to change, yet also a sense of optimism that women are
themselves changing their own situation. The problems that remain are
legion - sexual harassment, domestic violence, legal disabilities,
subordination in marriage and personal law, lack of land rights,
difficulties in employment, the lack of childcare facilities, pregnancy
testing, consequent dismissal, wage discrimination. Yet in each country
there are courageous women's organisations using research, publicity,
lobbying and direct action in a continuing struggle to transform the
realities still faced by so many women, and especially the poor.
