CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Nature and Environmental Writers - College and University Educators
(NEW-CUE), a non-profit, environmental education organization, invites
submissions for possible presentation at the first Annual Writers'
Workshop and Conference in honor of Rachel Carson, June 12-15, 2001 in
Boothbay Harbor, ME. New and established writers, instructors, and
practitioners are encouraged to send examples of their work: essays,
poems, children's literature and selections from fiction and journalism,
illustrating the environmental issues raised by Rachel Carson who
blended science with a lyrical appreciation of nature.

The event will be both a scholarly and a social occasion, and we welcome
submissions that represent a 15-minute reading by the author. This will
be an opportunity to hear keynote and plenary speakers discuss their
work, to meet with publishers, and to informally share your writing and
explore ways in which the various genre respond to the environmental
challenges of the 21st Century. Daily concurrent sessions will include
readings of accepted submissions followed by a lively discussion of the
way nature is presented as both a form and as an ideal. Further
information on the event can be found on the organization's web-site
http://www.new-cue.org

Please submit if your work will add to the discussion of the following
topics:

- the timelessness and constancy of all things within the web of
creation
- informing and empowering public involvement in environmental matters
- preservation and protection of the natural environment
- the integration of natural science with creative writing
- awakening of emotional responses to nature
- the intersection of science with emotion; reason with compassion
- the demystification and illumination of science for the general reader

- description and understanding of the ordinary as well as the
spectacular in nature
- love of the sea and the creatures both large and small that live
within it
- advocacy for ecosystem preservation
- reverence for life in all its forms
- value of natural beauty in the modern world
- cultivating a sense of wonder among children and adults as an
emotional response to the living world

Submissions should include a cover page with the author's full name,
institutional or organizational affiliation, and contact information
including mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail address. Submissions
should be typed and no longer than three pages, with the author's name
included on each page. Please send surface mail, fax or e-mail before
