Subject: Calendar Advisory: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

CALENDAR ADVISORY: CENTER FOR WOMEN'S GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AT RUTGERS
COORDINATES CAMPAIGN AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE, NOV. 25-DEC. 10

Thousands of activists around the world will mobilize to raise awareness and
combat violence against women during this year's 16 Days of Activism

Against Gender Violence, to be held Nov. 25 through Dec. 10.
The event marks the 10th annual campaign coordinated by the Center for
Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

The opening date of the campaign commemorates International Day Against
Violence Against Women, first declared in 1981 at the first Feminist
Encuentro for Latin
America and the Caribbean, and the anniversary of the murder of the Mirabal
sisters in the Dominican Republic in 1960. Last year, the United Nations
General Assembly designated Nov. 25 as the International Day for the
Elimination of Violence Against
Women.

The campaign's closing date, Dec. 10, is International Human Rights Day,
marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

Other dates that fall during the campaign are World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, and the
anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, Dec. 6, in which 14 women were murdered
at the University of Montreal in 1989.

During the 16 days, activities around the world, including seminars, poster
campaigns, banquets, protests, performances, debates, films and photo
exhibits, will call for the elimination of all forms of violence against
women.
