GIS PROJECT ASSISTANT NEEDED to analyze and map historic and current
distributions of Hawaiian native forest birds.   Results of this project
will aid in understanding trends in population size and range, and in
managing and restoring populations of birds and their habitats.   Data sets
constitute a large, historical set of surveys of Hawaiian forest birds
following Variable Circular Plot methodology.  Project assistant will be
primarily be responsible for producing current and  historic distribution
maps and conducting analyses using ARCVIEW/ARCINFO;  will also assist the
project leader in describing trends in bird populations over the  last 30
years, developing habitat suitability models, and maintaining database.
Incumbent will be an employee of the Research Corporation of the University
of  Hawaii and will be based at Kilauea Field Station in Hawaii Volcanoes
National  Park.  The position requires a B.S. in Geographic Information
Systems,  Conservation Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, or related
field; a minimum of one year's experience in GIS (ARCVIEW/ARCINFO)
application; and working  knowledge of personal computers using Windows or
Windows 95 operating  systems, ACCESS, EXCEL, and ARCVIEW/ARCINFO.
Desirable qualifications:  experience in analyzing bird census data,
experience developing  habitat suitability models.  Salary approximately
$25-30,000/year + benefits.
