The deadline is drawing near for entries to be submitted for the 2000
Asia-Pacific Awards for Excellence in Environmental Journalism and Photo
Journalism. The contest was first introduced in 1990 to promote high
quality coverage of environmental issues and acknowledge the work of
communication professionals in that field.The winners last year were
Joe R. Kanekane,News Director/The Independent-Papua New Guina and
Abu Taher Khokon,photographer/Financial Express in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVE
The 2000 Asia-Pacific Awards for Excellence in Environmental Journalism and
Photo Journalism is an initiative of the Asia-Pacific Forum of
Environmental Journalists (APFEJ). Earlier awards were supported by the
ADB,FNS and UN-ESCAP. The aim of the awards is to recognize
the efforts of journalists and photographers working on environmental
issues and to encourage environmental journalism across the region.

THEME
The main theme of the award is high quality coverage of the environment,
its conservation and threats to it. Journalists are invited to submit
published stories and photographs that have covered any aspect of the
environment in their country or region. This includes: Scientific research
and findings; Protected areas; Ecotourism; Conservation; Sustainable
Development; Eco-friendly alternative products and fuels; Environmental
education: Environmental political issues; Threats to the environment;
Mining, logging, oil extraction and other forms of exploitation of natural
resources and Social issues.

PARTICIPANTS
All journalists and photographers, staff or freelance, can take part in the
contest. They should be residents of the Asia-Pacific region and work in or
with the local or national media.

SUBMITTING ENTRIES
The award will consider only printed articles and images published in the
local print media. Each journalist will be able to submit a minimum of five
published articles or photos. These should have been published in
newspapers or magazines between January 1 and December 31,2000.

Entries (including copies of photographs) can be submitted via post by
June 26,2001. Winners will be announced on September,2001.
Along with copies of the articles and photos, entrants
should submit their full name, address, phone/fax/email contact numbers,
dates of publication, and names of newspapers/magazines.

AWARDS
There are two awards - one for journalism and one for photo journalism.
The prize is the same for each category.

PRIZES
*The 02 Award winners of the two categories have been invited to
participate in the 13th APFEJ World Congress of Environmental Journalists
in The Philippines; Oct 22-26,2001.All expenses to them including
return air tickets to Philippines,hotel accommodation and meals during the
congress and registration fee will be paid. This prize is not transferable
or redeemable in cash.They will have an opportunity to meet with colleagues
from around the world to share experiences and examine important issues
related
to environmental reporting.
The five winners in each sub-regional(East Asia,South East Asia,
South Asia,Central Asia,West Asia and the Pacific)will received the award
certificates.All winners will receive a three-year free membership in the
APFEJ.

* The awards, along with certificates will be presented to the
winners on Oct 23,2001 at a special ceremony at the congress
in the presence of more than 100 participants from nearly 50 countries.

JUDGING PANEL
An independent three-person panel of judges will be selected by
APFEJ to decide the winners of the awards.
