The Eco-Research Chair (ERC) of Environmental Law & Policy at the University of
Victoria, B.C., seeks a Managing Director who can advance the project in an integrated
fashion so as to support the work of an ecologically-based "think-tank" in British
Columbia. Polis is an integrated research and policy project of this program. This
project encompasses a number of research associates working in a range of
environmental and social areas, including community-based natural resource management,

INFORM WASTE PROGRAM IN NEW YORK WANTS A PROGRAM DIRECTOR
INFORM's Solid Waste Prevention Program in New York wishes to hire a Program Director.
The Program Director will work with INFORM's Development staff to raise the Program's
funds. INFORM collaborates with other organizations to promote adoption of policies
and practices that enable government agencies, businesses and communities to reduce
the growing amount of solid wastes they generate. The Program promotes model waste
prevention practices, including changes in procurement guidelines and
facility-operating practices that reduce waste and increase the purchase of products
and packaging that contain recycled materials. The Program may also focus on advancing
waste preventing policies at the federal, state or local level, such as extended
producer responsibility (EPR), that can drive businesses to design products that are
more durable, reusable and recyclable. INFORM will evaluate the New York City solid
waste budget to insure that funding is sufficient for effective implementation of
feasible solid waste prevention programs. This includes, but is not limited to, two
key initiatives that were mandated in the November 2000 NYC Solid Waste Management
Plan Modification. They include a three-year $6.3 million Local Waste Prevention
Coordinators Program; and, the establishment of an Office of Environmental Purchasing
in the City's central procurement agency, the Department of Citywide Administrative
Services (DCAS).

overview of all Program commitments made in funded grant proposals and insures that

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Environment
Directorate, wishes to appoint a Senior Economist - CGE Modelling. The OECD is an
international organisation based in Paris with some 2000 staff. The Senior Economist
will act as the focal point within the Environment Directorate for quantitative
modelling of the interface between environmental pressures and economic activity. The
economist will construct and modify a computable general equilibrium model and related
quantitative frameworks, capable of efficiently linking economic activities to changes
in environmental variables, and at various levels of aggregation. This person will
ensure that databases are maintained to support this framework, and carry out
appropriate model calibrations; make use of this modelling framework, undertake
quantitative analysis of important policy work currently being undertaken in the
Directorate, including periodic Environmental Outlooks, climate change, and sectoral
economic reforms (e.g. transport, agriculture); and, draft and defend reports based on
these analyses; and, ensure effective and efficient use of the human resources
allocated to the activity. The successful candidate will have an advanced university
degree in economics, combined with at least 10 years' practical experience in
environmental field and in modelling; have a demonstrated ability in computable
general equilibrium modelling, with direct links to environmental policy issues; have
proficiency in 'GAMS' and 'C' programming language tools; and, have an ability to
supervise the work of consultants and permanent staff, and to organise and manage the

The Centre for Transport Studies, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
plans to appoint a Research Assistant / Associate in Transport Infrastructure, Medical
Technology, and Safety. The Centre for Transport Studies seeks a research assistant
for an EPSRC funded project to evaluate the impact of road infrastructure and medical
technology improvements on traffic- related fatalities and injuries. The key objective
of this study is to conduct a statistical analysis of how road infrastructure
elements, such as lane widths, curvature, relative capacity, and other features affect
traffic-related fatalities and injuries. The analysis will seek to control for
demographic and other factors known to also influence traffic fatalities and injuries.
One of these that will be investigated in detail is the role of improvements in
medical technology over time. The successful candidate should have experience with
large databases and the ability to write computer programs in Fortran, Pascal or C++.
It is expected that research papers on the work will be co-written and presented by
the successful candidate. The successful candidate will have a Masters degree or a PhD
with a background in Transport, Economics, Geography, Regional Science, Planning,
Public Policy, Health Policy or a closely related field. Imperial College is the
