PLEASE SEND WHERE U CAN AND SUPPORT OUR YOUTH IN
STOPPING THE EXPLOITATION OF OUR TRADITIONAL 'UNCEDED'
TERRITORY. WE ARE AWARE THAT THERE IS A MEDIA
BLACKOUT ON THIS SITUATION, WE NEED TO LET OUR PEOPLES
KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON....STOP THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKI
RESORTS WHICH IS THE PLAYGROUND FOR THE RICH. WE WILL
NOT LET THEM TAKE AWAY WHAT IS OUR INHERENT RIGHT;
WHEN THEY TAKE THE LAND AWAY; THEY ARE TAKING AWAY OUR
LIFESTYLE, OUR FOODS, OUR CULTURE, OUR WAY OF LIFE AND
TEACHINGS, OUR FUTURE AND OUR GRANDCHILDREN'S FUTURE.
STOP THE DEVELOPMENT OF MELVIN CREEK (SUTIKALH) AND
SHUSWAP TERRITORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IN SOLIDARITY ,

MEDIA ADVISORY

BRITISH COLUMBIA ASSETS AND LANDS CORPORATION OFFICE

OCCUPATION

Native Youth, Elders and Land-Users protest provincial
and federal involvement in

illegal sales of Aboriginal Title Lands

(Kamloops, Secwepemc Territory/May 23, 2001) At 10 am
this morning Native Youth, Elders and Land-Users
occupied the British Columbia Assets and Lands
Corporation Office at 145 3rd Street in Kamloops, BC.
We are demanding:

An end to all sales of "crown land" on the Territories
of Indigenous Nations
A halt to all land tenures and land license agreements

A halt all ski resort development
Recognition of the Right of Indigenous Nations to
govern our own lands and resources.

Our protest is directed at both the provincial and
federal governments for their failure to implement and
recognize the inherent and legal right of Indigenous
Nations to their Traditional Territories.

In 1997, the Supreme Court of Canada's Delgamuukw
decision confirmed that our Aboriginal Title and
Rights are protected by section 35 of the Constitution
Act 1982. In spite of this, the Canadian government
refuses to recognize, affirm and implement Aboriginal
Title, and British Columbia continues to assume 100%
jurisdiction over lands and resources on the
Territories of the 23 Indigenous Nations in British
Columbia. Both the provincial and federal government
continue to ignore our legal property rights to our
Indigenous Territories.

As a provincial crown company, British Columbia Assets
and Land Corporation must radically change its
policies to recognize and implement our Aboriginal
Title and Rights. Both the provincial and federal
governments must uphold their own laws in respect to
Aboriginal Rights and Title. BC and Canada must stop
violating our Human Rights and stop the theft of our
homelands.

This is basic human justice and we, the Native Youth,
Elders and Land-Users, will accept nothing less.
