The Bitter Taste in That Chocolate
A disturbing story (launching another three-part series) in the Philadelphia
Inquirer exposing the African slave labor that goes into the production of
much of the world's chocolate. The West African country of Ivory Coast
produces 43 percent of the world's cocoa beans -- the raw material in
chocolate -- and many of the farms there rely on slavery, the story says.
The size of the problem is unknown, but U.S. officials estimate 15,000
children between 9 and 12 have been sold into slavery in the country in
recent years.
