Brazil Bans Canada, U.S. Beef Products - Ottawa http://ca.news.yahoo.com/010703/5/6vy0.html Tuesday July 3 11:44 AM EST Brazil Bans Canada, U.S. Beef Products - Ottawa OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said on Tuesday that Brazil had banned imports of live cattle from Canada and the United States, as well as imports of semen and cattle embryos, citing fears of bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) or mad cow disease. "The Brazil authorities told us they had a suspension," said Frederique Moulin, a veterinarian and manager in the CFIA's health division. "The U.S. are included too," she said, but added that Brazil had yet to serve official notification of the ban which apparently started on June 27. Moulin said the ban was a surprise since Canada is rated as free of the brain-wasting disease. She said Canada has advised its exporters, which sell about C$1 million ($600,000) of the beef products to Brazil annually, of the ban. Canada temporarily banned Brazilian beef products in February over BSE fears. The two countries have also been warring with each other over trade subsidies to regional aircraft manufacturers.
