SECOND ANNUAL WRITERS' CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP
HONORING RACHEL CARSON

Nature and Environmental Writers - College and University Educators
(NEW-CUE) will sponsor the Second Annual Writers' Conference and Workshop
Honoring Rachel Carson in Boothbay Harbor, ME, from June 11th - 14th,
2001.  The Conference/Workshop will take place at The Spruce Point Inn,
one of New England's finest country inns and one of the North Atlantic
coastline's most secure and serene locations.

The program will include a Keynote Address by Bill McKibben, author of The
End of Nature, and presentations by such notable authors as Linda Lear,
Carson's biographer, and environmental journalist, Tom Horton.  Other
featured speakers will include Joseph Bruchac, native American
author/storyteller, and Andrea Cohen, poet and communications director of
MIT's Sea Grant Program.  In addition, Will Richard, licensed Maine guide
and nature photographer, and Stephen Kress, director of Audubon's Seabird
Program, will offer special workshops at the event.  There will also be
guided hikes with representatives of the Boothbay Region Land Trust and
tide pool explorations led by a biologist from the Bigelow Laboratory for
Ocean Sciences.

The Conference/Workshop will be a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of
the publication of Silent Spring, and participants will have an
opportunity to hear the featured speakers discuss the ways Rachel Carson
may have influenced their own work, to listen to readings submitted for
presentation at the event, and to participate in a variety of workshops
and outdoor activities in an area that is often referred to as the boating
capital of New England.

 The program will also include daily sessions during which selected
participants will read from their work, followed by informal discussions
and writing exercises.  There will also be a round-table discussion during
one of the sessions, and interested participants will be able to meet with
publishers to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with
publishing their work.  New and established writers are encouraged to
submit examples of their work for possible presentation.  For registration
