WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 

SALARY: $2,600 to $3,600 monthly depending on degree and years of relevant
experience (plus full benefits package)

CLOSING DATE: Screening of applicants to begin on December 5, 2001, thereafter
the position will remain open until filled.  

STATUS OF ASSIGNMENT:
Full-time position through the Endangered Species Recovery Program (ESRP) at
California State University, Stanislaus Foundation.  This is expected to be a
multi-year appointment; dependent upon funding and job performance.  Primary
work site is the Mojave Desert, California but residence location is flexible.
THIS IS NOT A STATE FUNDED POSITION.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The successful candidate will act as Project Coordinator for a research program
on the Mohave ground squirrel, a state-listed threatened species, in the Mojave
Desert of California; under the supervision of the Project Director,
participate in and coordinate ecological research on the Mohave ground squirrel
and associated animal and plant species; and conduct field studies including
planning, logistical arrangements, data collection and analysis, and report
preparation.  Research topics will include documenting current status,
distribution, and abundance of the Mohave ground squirrel, habitat
requirements, diet and resource selection, reproductive biology, disease, and
predation. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the Project Director,
ESRP Director, and agency staff, including California Dept. of Fish & Game, US
Dept. of Interior, and US Dept. of Defense in planning cooperative research
activities and making public presentations. The Project Coordinator will also
be required to collaborate with and supervise staff biologists, consultants,
and student interns during extensive field investigations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A working knowledge of Mojave Desert biota and natural communities is helpful,
but not required. At minimum, the successful candidate is expected to rapidly
become familiar with the biota of the western Mojave Desert and with survey and
research methods for small mammal populations; have the ability to work under
supervision and also be self-directed; have the ability to establish and
maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, agency staff, and
the general public; experience with data entry, statistical analysis, and
database management using MS-DOS/Windows based computers; demonstrated ability
to analyze and summarize data and to develop written reports on results of
research; ability to camp overnight at unimproved research sites periodically;
ability to walk up to 12 miles per day over rough and steep terrain and work
outdoors in all types of weather; safely operate four-wheel drive vehicles;
work at sites to include, but not limited to, San Bernardino County,
southwestern Inyo County, and the desert portions of Los Angeles and Kern
counties; possess a valid California driver's license, and ability to obtain a
California defensive driver's certificate.

HIGHLY DESIRED SKILLS:
Candidates with skills in wildlife research and experience in field
investigations of small mammal populations are particularly encouraged to
apply.  Excellent communication skills are highly desirable.  Applicants should
have an excellent background in data analysis and possess strong abilities in
scientific writing, including preparation of manuscripts for publication.    

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Requires an M.A./M.S. or Ph.D. in the biological sciences or a closely related
field such as wildlife management with a strong background in wildlife ecology,
biological field research and technical writing, or equivalent work experience.
