Oregon Cuts Name 'Squaw' in Forest

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Oregon Geographic Names Board
has
approved removing the word "squaw" from three areas in the
Willamette National Forest.

That leaves about 170 spots -- from rivers to ridges to
ranger stations -- tagged with the word, which refers to
the female genitalia in the Algonquin language.

Saturday's unanimous vote was made by the 25-member
group
charged with naming natural features.

In June, the Legislature passed a law banning the term from
public place names. Although local authorities or the
federal government are responsible for erasing the word
from man-made landmarks such as parks or street signs, the
board is responsible for the natural features.

Among the name changes, Squaw Mountain is to be renamed
Latiwi Mountain, the word Molala use to refer to
themselves.

Maine and Minnesota have similar "squaw" bans.
