------- Forwarded message follows ------- From: Sarah C Miller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Transatlantic Collegium of Philosophy announces an international conference on feminist ethics: Gender and Moral Subjectivity: Feminist Dimensions of Practical Philosophy/ Geschlecht und Moralische Subjektivitaet: Feministische Dimensionen praktischer Philosophie June 6-8, 2002 Phillips-Universitaet Marburg Marburg, Germany Speakers: Alison Jaggar (University of Colorado at Boulder), Herlinde Pauer-Studer (Universitaet Wien), Marion Heinz (Universitaet-GH Siegen), Allegra de Laurentiis (SUNY Stony Brook), Eva Kittay (SUNY Stony Brook), Ulrike Prokop (Phillips-Universitaet Marburg), and Cynthia Willett (Emory University) What is the relevance of gender to moral subjectivity? What can a feminist perspective contribute to practical philosophy? In exploring these and related questions, feminist ethicists carry out two main tasks. First, they examine and criticize traditional western moral theory and moral subjectivity regarding the differential roles attributed to women and men within such theory, the perception of women's "natural" moral capabilities or inferiority, and the association of superior ethical concepts with culturally "masculine" traits. Second, feminists ethicists offer diverse responses to these perceived difficulties and biases as they reinterpret traditional philosophical texts and advance new moral theories and principles that consider moral capabilities traditionally identified as "feminine." Drawing upon this background of philosophical engagement, the conference, "Gender and Moral Subjectivity: Feminist Dimensions of Practical Philosophy," will focus on several current debates and tensions in feminist ethics, including that between autonomy and interdependence, universality and particularity, and redistribution and recognition. During the course of the conference, we hope to explore these debates and to evaluate their philosophical consequences. The conference will feature a number of different formats, including keynote lectures, lectures by faculty members of the Transatlantic Collegium of Philosophy, reading groups lead by faculty members, a book talk, and a roundtable discussion. The conference is open to scholars with various levels of experience with feminist ethics and has been designed to engage and educate philosophers from a variety of theoretical orientations.
