Over 200,000 People March in The United States!

Huge Rally Joins Protests Across Globe to Decry U.S.' Iraq Policy
by Wyatt Buchanan, Christopher Heredia and Suzanne Herel

Tens of thousands of protesters marched down Market Street in San Francisco
on Saturday afternoon in a major demonstration against President Bush's
policy on Iraq -- the largest peace rally police and protesters could
remember since the Vietnam War.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators march through downtown San Francisco on
Saturday to protest a potential war against Iraq. Demonstrators filled
about a mile-long stretch of city blocks as they marched from the Financial
District to the plaza in front of City Hall holding signs that said, "Money
for jobs, not for war" and "No blood for oil."

Thousands protest Iraq war in DC
By Stefany Moore

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- A crowd estimated at more than 100,000
gathered in the nation's capital Saturday to rally and march in protest of
a potential war with Iraq.

In the shadow of the Washington Monument and steps away from the Vietnam
War Memorial, the group demanded a halt to preparations for a possible war
against Iraq.

On the stage, Jesse Jackson -- his voice amplified across several acres of
Constitution Gardens -- shouted, "If we act out of fear and not hope, we
get bitter and not better."

Antiwar rally in St. Paul draws thousands

http://startribune.com/stories/462/3391436.html

Silver-haired Jim Steinhagen, a combat Marine in Korea a half-century ago,
and Omar Jamal, a Somali who came to Minnesota seven years ago, stood
shoulder to shoulder Saturday afternoon.

Along with several thousand other Minnesotans, they marched from the St.
Paul Cathedral to the State Capitol to voice their opposition to a war with
Iraq and to mourn Sen. Paul Wellstone.

Wellstone stirred the Senate earlier this month with an impassioned speech
urging his colleagues to restrain the Bush administration.

"A lot of innocent people, Americans and Iraqis, would die," Steinhagen
said. "It would ride a lot better with me if the rest of the world was with
us, and if we'd find some of those 'weapons of mass destruction' that Bush
is talking about first."

Medea Benjamin is not only one of San Francisco's leading activists, she's
the Zelig of political protest. And with the country inching toward war,
the 50-year-old Noe Valley resident has never been in so many different
scenes.

She made national news for interrupting Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
as he pitched his war plan to Congress last month. And for getting arrested
at President Bush's August speech in Stockton. And for her street theater
outside Vice President's Dick Cheney's appearance that month in San Francisco.

Calendar of Demonstrations for Peace

Many peace activists feel isolated because peace activities are not
reported in mainstream media. In one effort to help to correct this, the
WRL has set up this page to post events from around the country that have
happened, will happen, or are happening on a continuous basis. If you know
of such an event, please submit the form at the bottom of this page, or
call (212-228-0450), fax (212-228-6193), e-mail ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) us.

Note, these events are listed as a public service and are not necessarily
endorsed by the War Resisters League.
