The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies' Environment and Sustainable Development Program invites applications for visiting research fellowships at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels, as well as for environmental professionals of any nationality working in the policy arena or in non-governmental organizations. Each year four or five environmental scholars are selected from an international competition to participate with a larger community of Mexicanist scholars for six- to ten-month residential appointments to conduct the write-up stage of original, applied research. Since its inception in 1998, this multi-disciplinary program has provided a unique opportunity to support the creation of a cadre of environmental experts from a variety of critical sectors who can have an influence over the regional planning process.

We are currently soliciting interdisciplinary research proposals focused on the environment and sustainable development along the U.S.-Mexico border. Successful candidates will participate as Visiting Research Fellows in the Center's project, "Equity and the Environment: Exploring Sustainable Alternatives in the U.S.-Mexico Border." Fellowship research should be focused on border environmental issues related to: transboundary resources (water, energy, air); natural resource management and land use; environmental justice; sustainable community development; environmental regimes in the border region. Projects focusing on vulnerable populations, or that take a gender perspective on any of the topical areas are encouraged. Successful candidates can begin residency as early as September of 2003 and as late as January of 2004.
