Final Call for Papers

The Allen Morris Conference Committee and the Florida State University
History Department are
pleased to announce the third biennial Allen Morris Conference on the
History of Florida and the Atlantic World, to be held in Tallahassee,
Florida, February 14-15, 2004. The conference theme is "Winds of Change:
Environmental, Political, Social, and Cultural Forces in the Shaping of the
Atlantic World." Professor Stuart Schwartz, the George Burton Adams
Professor of History at Yale University, will present the keynote address
entitled "Hurricanes and the Shaping of Circum-Caribbean Cultures."

In suggesting that the Atlantic World is the ever-changing product of
sometimes sudden, violent, and radical changes reminiscent of the forces of
a hurricane, the Program Committee invites proposals that examine the impact
of not just physical, but also institutional and cultural transformations in
the region from the colonial to the modern era. We also seek papers that
serve to integrate Florida into its wider Atlantic context, as Florida's
geographical location has provided myriad connections to a much larger
world. Papers might address a wide array of subjects including race and
ethnicity as elements of change, political ideologies in flux, and
environmentalism as a catalyst for action.

The Program Committee welcomes proposals for individual papers or complete
panels. (Electronic submissions are accepted.) Interested applicants should
submit a proposal of no more than 300 words for each paper and a brief
curriculum vitae for each participant. Individuals interested in serving as
a chair or commentator should forward a vita as well. Proposals must be
received no later than April 1, 2003.

Papers delivered at the Conference will be eligible for inclusion in a
planned anthology on the history of Florida and the Atlantic World.

Paper proposals and inquiries should be addressed to:
