From: "Chiaviello, Anthony" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, 09 September, 2003 12:11 PM Call for Papers Panel on "Southwest Ranching: Sustainable Agriculture or Ecological Devastation?" Southwest Ranching area Southwest/Texas Pop. Culture Assn. American Culture Assn. Conference, National Conference Marriott Rivercenter San Antonio, TX April 7-10, 2004 (A joint meeting with the National Pop Culture Assn. and American Pop. Culture Assn. annual meeting) Submission Deadline: November 15, 2003 The Southwest Ranching area of the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association of the American Pop Culture Assn. is soliciting papers for a panel on issues in southwest cattle ranching, particularly concerning public lands ranching, its ecological aspects, and rhetorical dimensions of the debate on that subject. While open to papers on any aspect of southwest ranching, of particular interest are presentations that take a position on the sustainability of livestock operations on public land allotments in the arid southwest. Ideally, we would like to see papers presenting perspectives on both sides of the issue: either claiming how ranching in the arid southwest can be made to be sustainable, or, conversely, claiming that such operations contribute to ecological damage to arid lands. Also of interest are analytical pieces that provide insight into the rhetoric on the issue. The intention is to foster an open discussion of how ranching affects range ecology and to hear appropriately supported positions from both sides, as well as papers analyzing the rhetoric of either or both sides of the issue. Of further interest are presentations that address how the issue might be resolved for the future. Papers should be no more than 15 minutes in presentation time, and may be shorter if the speaker can then expound upon his or her perspectives in ensuing discussion.
