Florida International University, Marine Biology Program: Ph.D. Student opportunities for fall 2006
POSITION: Ph.D. student positions (3) offered in the field of marine microbial ecology to study the link between microbial diversity and microbial biogeochemical and food web processes in pelagic and benthic systems of Florida Bay and the subtropical Gulf Stream region off the Florida coast. Studies may involve the diversity of bacterial or eukaryotic (protistan, phytoplankton) communities, factors determining community diversity, quantitative microbial diversity, effects of diversity on nutrient cycling processes, and/or top-down (food web) controls of microbial diversity. Equipment available for research include light and epifluorescence microscopes, FACSort flow cytometer, fluorescent plate reader, real-time PCR, DGGE and electrophoresis equipment, and state-of-the- art research laboratory and graduate student office space in the brand new Marine Biology building. QUALIFICATIONS: Solid undergraduate and/or graduate education in marine or aquatic ecology and/or biology is expected. Research and/or teaching experience is of advantage. Experience with molecular techniques is beneficial. Candidates are expected to participate in and contribute to project development. Admission to the graduate program is competitive and requires GRE scores (minimum of 1120, verbal plus quantitative) at the time of application. Foreign students must present a TOEFL and Test of Spoken English (TSE; minimum score of 50) at the time of application, except for students from English speaking countries. WORK PLACE will be FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus, located directly on Biscayne Bay in North Miami. The new 57,000 sqft Marine Biology building with state- of-the-art research and teaching labs and office space is located directly on the waterfront of Biscayne Bay. BENEFITS: Initial support is available through Teaching Assistantships, involving 2 sections/week of undergraduate lab course teaching. Annual stipend of $18,000 plus 90% tuition waiver and basic health care plan are provided. Exceptionally qualified students may be eligible for a Presidential Fellowship ($23,000 annual stipend).
