Atmospheric Mercury Monitoring and Assessment Specialist

GS – 11/12 Salary Range

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Markets Division in the
Office of Atmospheric Programs has an exciting and challenging
opportunity to work as part of the Assessment and Communications Branch
in the Washington, DC area to advance a science-based, atmospheric
mercury monitoring and assessment program. The EPA has the need for an
individual with scientific knowledge of the fate, transport, and effects
of atmospheric mercury in the environment, and experience working with
environmental monitoring networks and air measurement systems.

The incumbent will be responsible for working in partnership with
different EPA offices, staff from other agencies, academic institutions,
and long-term environmental monitoring and research programs to develop
a nationwide atmospheric mercury monitoring network. The incumbent will
review scientific literature and methods of measurement applicable to
wet and dry mercury deposition, analyze and manage data from air
measurement systems, prepare technical reports and publications,
coordinate with different agency programs and institutions, and
communicate scientific information to scientific and non-scientific
audiences.

Interested candidates should be enthusiastic, organized self-starters
with scientific understanding of atmospheric chemistry or a related
field. Experience with mercury measurement tools, numerical models, and
environmental indicators are a plus. The candidate must also possess
demonstrated analytical and writing skills and the capacity to convert
complex scientific information into easy-to-understand information for
non-scientific audiences.
